Is Your Email Account Safe?

You may or may not know that basically anything you write in an email can easily be read by many people as it gets to the person you send it to.  The rule of thumb is, don’t write anything in an eamil that you wouldn’t put in a newspaper.

But there is also another danger with email.

A friend of mine who has a hotmail account just got hacked.  Everyone who is listed in her account got an email that looks like it is from her and it is asking for money.  She cannot get into her account to delete addresses or reply to anyone and there is no way to get a hold of hotmail, so all she can do is try to remember everyone who is in her account and then get ahold of each person.

This can happen with hotmail, yahoo, gmail, or any other free public email account.  I did a google search and found information for hacking msn as well, so if you have a question, put your provider in a search for hacking and see if it comes up.

I have gmail accounts, which I use when I fill out forms online, but I have been trying to get away from using them personally, and now will probably delete one or more of them.  I have consistently gone in and deleted all contacts from both accounts, but if my account is hacked, then the hacker will have access to everyone who ever emailed me or anyone I have ever emailed.  And maybe some passwords too.

(by the way, if you use gmail, your email account is also connected to google voice, your blogger account and many other things, so check all those places too)

Here are some suggestions for steps to take based on my online research:

1. Use a local internet provider for your personal email, or at least a private one.
2. If you have ever had a gmail, hotmail, yahoo, msn, etc account, and stopped using it, first go back and remove all emails and empty your address book and then close it.
3. If you presently have an account with a public email, such as above, go in and print out your address book so you can alert everyone if it is hacked, then delete all emails with personal information.

This also happened to another friend of mine last fall through facebook. Some of her friends even sent money, but they didn’t know it was being sent to the hacker and it took her months to fix everything.

Be very careful online!  It is not a safe place!

Livescribe 4.0 Pulse Digital Smartpen Review

I’ve been eyeing the Livescribe smartpen for several weeks and am excited to say that my husband gave it to me as a Christmas gift this year.

This pen is everything it claims to be.  I have a Mac, so when I first saw the concept in the Fly Fusion Silver Pentop Computer Set a while back, I was very impressed, but even though there are other digital pens out there and Livescribe had this pen available for PC’s first, there hasn’t really been anything that works on a Mac (unless you have a windows interface on your Mac) … until now.

So what exactly does this pen do?

When you need to take notes in a class, a business meeting, an interview or anything else, simply write as you normally would into a special Livescribe journal, spiral notebook, and/or purse-size notepad (or you can print your own paper from the Livescribe website) and when you return to your computer, you can upload it onto your desktop or share it online.

The best part is, unlike other digital pens, there is also a record feature.  So while you are furiously taking notes, all you need to do is hit record and the entire lecture/meeting is recorded while you write.  When you review your notes later, touch your pen to any of your writing and you will hear what the professor/speaker said at that very minute.  Incredible, isn’t it?

You can upload the notes and audio together and use it on blogs and websites as a “Pencast” which appears in a video-like format.

Here is a quick one that I did for you:

Sample Pencast
brought to you by Livescribe

I also tried it out at a small meeting and it works great!

I do need to alert you that with a Mac, you will need to have Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard, which you can purchase on Amazon. I tried to use it without upgrading to Snow Leopard and the desktop software did not work, but it was an easy fix for only $25 and now it’s working fine!

I am going to be using this when my husband and I study a book together as we take notes and have discussions.  It will be great for reviewing our thoughts.

This could also be used in Network Marketing for doing a 1-on-1 meeting with someone.  Use the record button while you are drawing out your presentation and then it can be uploaded and sent to them to watch the presentation as many times as they want!

If you have a Livescribe Smartpen, send me a comment with how you are using it!  If you don’t have one yet, comment on some creative ways you would like to use it!

You can buy your Livescribe 4.0 Pulse Digital Smartpen here, at Amazon

Internet Thieves

I had my first experience with online stealing yesterday morning.  I received an email in my inbox thanking me for my purchase at a gaming community.  I get a lot of bogus emails of that sort, and I  checked with each person in my family, plus we don’t gamble (it was for poker chips) so I wasn’t too worried about it and deleted it, but just to be sure I went to my paypal account to see if it was true.

You guessed it, I had two withdrawals, one for $150, one for $50 and they were approved.  I couldn’t believe it.  If this has never happened to you before, it’s hard to explain the feeling you have of being violated.  My paypal is directly connected to my bank account, so they were getting into my personal life!

I immediately called my bank and alerted them and then I called paypal and they assured me that they would make sure everything was straightened out and made right.

Needless to say, I went to every website I use and changed my passwords.

I don’t understand how or why these things happen, but it’s a very real thing and it could happen to anyone.  If paypal is not secure, what is?

A friend of mine had a credit card charge recently that was the same type of thing.  Another friend of mine had a facebook scam where emails were sent to her friends (as if they were her) and asking for money.  And the night before my paypal incident someone else I know had the exact same charges from the exact same gaming community taken from their paypal account.

So friends, be very careful and take the following steps

  1. do not use the same password everywhere and change it regularly, write it on a piece of paper and keep it in a safe place
  2. when you get an email regarding an online account or your personal information, NEVER click on the link.  Close that window and open up a new window and go to the website that you know (for example, I did not click on any links in the confirmation email, I went to what I know is the paypal address.)  These thieves can make the website look exactly like the one they are impersonating… you won’t be able to tell the difference.
  3. call your bank, your credit card, etc  and verify the incident with them.  Use the number on your bank statement or your credit card, not a number in an email or on a website

I hope I can save at least one person from having their money stolen.  I know how precious it is in this economy!
